How to Get There?

If you are not a VanIslander yet, you may enter the Island from either Victoria or Nanaimo. That is why we decided to tell you what is the easiest and fastest road towards our bear watching location. Furthermore, Ucluelet is accessible by plane, sea planes, and ferries.

From Victoria

The fastest route from downtown Victoria is via Trans-Canada Hwy/BC-1 N and BC-4 W for 293 km (182 miles) which will take about 4 hrs. Take Government St to Trans-Canada Hwy/BC-1 N for 1.2 km (0.7 miles). Follow Trans-Canada Hwy/BC-1 N and BC-19 N to Memorial Rd/BC-4 W. Take exit 60 from BC-19 N for 155 km (96.3 miles). Follow BC-4 W to Peninsula Rd in Ucluelet for 136 km (84.5 miles) and there you are at your destination.

From Nanaimo

You may also arrive at Downtown Nanaimo. The fastest route from Nanaimo is via BC-4 W for 182 km (113 miles) that takes about 2 hrs and a half. Take Third St to BC-19 N for 3.3 km (2 miles). Follow BC-19 N to Memorial Rd/BC-4 W. Take exit 60 from BC-19 N for 42.8 km (28.5 miles). Follow BC-4 W to Peninsula Rd in Ucluelet for 136 km (84.5 miles) and there you arrive at your destination in one of the recreational centers of Pacific Rim.

Itinerary for This Adventure

Day 1

Day 2

Get ready to see some bear. Tour will start early in the morning; so, please be at the initiating point at the decided hour. We start our journey to the shores in which bears get out to prepare their morning meal. After capturing enough pictures, we get on foot to see how bears live into the wood, if you will. If you choose the right time to visit Ucluelet, you’ll bring your luck here for some incredible whale watching too. The green lands of Ucluelet are a hotspot for birds; therefore, some of the migratory birds will inhabit the area temporarily. After having enough wildlife parties, we will head to one of the awesome beaches in Ucluelet. And get ready to start the final day of our journey.

Let’s Swim on foot between marine creatures! Start the day with the fantastic sunset on the beach. Have a great homemade breakfast, and then head to Ucluelet Aquarium. After wandering in between these water creatures, the rest of the day is yours to decide. Note that we will have lunch around the aquarium.

Dos & Don’ts for This Adventure

Bears are not aggressive in general. However, they might be attracted to the scent of food. Therefore, foods and beverages except water are not allowed.
Bears are highly sensitive about their cubs. In the case of watching bears on foot, please do not attempt to approach them, especially their cubs.
Do not catch their attention by any particular hand movement and gestures.
Taking photos is allowed. Nonetheless, do not use any flash cameras.
No smoking in bear viewing areas.
Bears are highly sensitive to olfactory signals, thus guests are urged not to wear strong scented deodorants or perfumes.
